Islam in Medieval Iberia

Depiction of Rabi'a grinding grain from a Persian dictionary

Sufism is a mystic body of religious practice found within Islam which is characterized by a focus on Islamic purification, spirituality, ritualism, asceticism and esotericism and began during the Golden Age of Islam, spreading quickly to Islamic taifas in Iberia sometime between 880 and 930 CE. The movement would change the spiritual landscape of the Islamic Al-Andalus including reformations to the roles and freedoms of women in society.
